Mammillaria zuccariniana

  • First description by Martius, Nov. Act. Nat. Cur., 16: 331 – 332 (11 – 12 ). 1832

  • Body: Solitary, sometimes branching dichotomously, blue-green, sub- globose to globose, to 20 cm in diameter.
  • Roots:
  • Sap: With latex.
  • Now referred to: magnimamma
  • Tubercule: Conical, four angled, 6 – 7 mm long and 4 – 5 mm wide.
  • Axil: With white wool.
  • Radial spine: 1 – 2, whitish with brown tips, 1 – 2 mm long.
  • Central spine: 3 – 4, the lower one the longest , to 30 mm long, occasionaly 1 – 2 smaller ones, curved or straight, brownish gray.
  • Flower: Purplish red, bell shaped, 10 – 15 mm long and in diameter.
  • Fruit: Red, 10 – 20 mm long and 6 mm in diameter.
  • Seed: Brown, 1,1 mm long and 0,8 mm wide, keeled.
  • Flowering period in Cultivation (Europe): June – july.
  • Minimum temperature: 5 – 10?C.
  • Habitat Substrate: Between rocks in a bit of humus soil.
  • Geographic Distribution: Mexico, Hidalgo, near La Encarnacion and San Luis Potosi, near Ciudad el Maiz.
  • Comments: The points differentiating him from magnimamma are the spination, bodyform and the isolated distribution area.
