Mammillaria xochipilli

  • First description by Reppenhagen: Die gattung Mammillaria nach dem heutigen stand meines wissens 1987; Herausgeber AfM, 1987: 167 – 169, 198 (Abb.), 220 (REM) .

  • Body: Solitary, globose to oblong, 40 – 200 mm high and 40 – 90 mm in diameter, depressed apically.
  • Roots: Fibrous.
  • Sap: Without latex.
  • Now referred to: polythele ssp polythele
  • Tubercule: Conical, firm, 8 – 10 mm long and in diameter,
  • Axil: With white wool.
  • Radial spine: 4 – 6, needle like, the lowest one the longest, straight, smooth, brown to black, 3 – 20 mm long.
  • Central spine: Absent.
  • Flower: Carmine-pink, bell shaped, 18 – 20 mm long and 12 – 15 mm in diameter.
  • Fruit: Club shaped, whitish green to reddish, ripens 3 months after flowering, 15 – 20 mm long and 3 – 5 mm in diameter.
  • Seed: Brown, club-shaped, keeled, 1,1 mm long and 0,6 mm wide. Hilum subbasal.
  • Flowering period in Cultivation (Europe): March – April.
  • Minimum temperature: 5 – 10?C.
  • Habitat Substrate: On quartzy fields with humus soil, surrounded by oak and pine woods.
  • Geographic Distribution: Mexico, Hidalgo, San Jos? del Oro near Zimapan. Altitude 2400 meter.
  • Comments: Slow growing species. Primary classified in the magnimamma group by Reppenhagen, later in the polythele group. Probably just a form of polythele ssp polythele with unconvincing differences.
