Mammillaria supraflumen

  • First description by Reppenhagen: Die gattung Mammillaria nach dem heutigen stand meines wissens 1987; Herausgeber AfM, 1987: 87 – 89 .

  • Body: Solitary, globose to cylindrical, sunken apically, covered with wool and spines, whitish green, 30 – 100 mm high, 40 – 70 mm in diameter.
  • Roots: Fibrous.
  • Sap: Without latex.
  • Now referred to: nunezii ssp nunezii
  • Tubercule: Four-angled pyramidal, firm, with humpbacked epidermis, 7 – 9 mm long and 5 – 7 mm in diameter.
  • Axil: With a few bristles.
  • Radial spine: 20 – 25, stiff bristle like, straight, expanding, the uppermost the shortest, glassy white, 3 – 7 mm long.
  • Central spine: 5 – 9, needle like, straight and sometimes one hooked, brown to reddish, 7 – 15 mm long.
  • Flower: Funnelform, dark carmine, 13 – 15mm long and 10 – 12 mm in diameter.
  • Fruit: Ovoid to club shaped, carmine, 10 – 15 mm long and 6 – 8 mm wide, ripens 12 – 14 months after flowering.
  • Seed: Brown, round to club-shaped , 0,9 mm long and 0,8 mm in diameter, testa striated, hilum subbasal.
  • Flowering period in Cultivation (Europe): April – may.
  • Minimum temperature: 8 – 10?C.
  • Habitat Substrate: On porous stones and basalt rocks in a bit of humus soil.
  • Geographic Distribution: Mexico, Jalisco, near Ferreria. Altitude 1600 m.
  • Comments: The difference with nunezii ssp nunezii is only the fruitcolor and a few spines more or less. Supraflumen needs an higher temperature in winter and not to much sunshine in summer.
