Mammillaria sanjuanensis

  • First description by Reppenhagen: Die gattung Mammillaria nach dem heutigen stand meines wissens 1987; Herausgeber AfM, 1987: 98 – 99, 188(Abb.), 210 (REM) .

  • Body: Solitary or clumping, globose to short cylindrical, 30 – 80 mm high and in diameter, covered on top with wool and spines.
  • Roots: Fibrous.
  • Sap: Without latex.
  • Now referred to: rekoi ssp rekoi
  • Tubercule: Conical with obtuse-angled tip, strong, 8 – 10 mm long and 5 – 7 mm wide at base.
  • Axil: Sparsely wool and a few bristles.
  • Radial spine: 16 – 23, bristle like, 4 – 7 mm long, the uppermost the shortest, straight, smooth, radiating, with somewhat thicker and darker base, glassy white.
  • Central spine: 4 – 8, needle like, straight, smooth ,with thicker and darker base, the lowest the longest, 7 – 13 mm long, glassy yellow to brown.
  • Flower: Funnelform, carmine, 20 – 25 mm long and 18 – 20 mm in diameter.
  • Fruit: Brownish red, club-shaped, 15 – 25 mm long and 3 – 5 mm in diameter, ripens 15 – 18 months after flowering.
  • Seed: Brown, 1,3 mm long and 0,9 mm in diameter. Hilum subbasal. Selffertile.
  • Flowering period in Cultivation (Europe): April – may.
  • Minimum temperature: 5 – 10?C.
  • Habitat Substrate: On rocky downhills in black humus soil, together with thorn – bush and oak-trees.
  • Geographic Distribution: Mexico, Oaxaca, near San Juan del Estando. Altitude 1.800 – 2.000 m.
  • Comments: Differences with M. rekoi ssp rekoi are minimal. Only the straight central spines, a few central spines and bristles more or less in the axils.
