Mammillaria monticola

  • First description by Reppenhagen, Die Gattung Mammillaria; 115; 497-498; 1987.

  • Body: Somewhat cylindrical, rarely clumping, 25 – 80 mm high and 30 – 60 mm in diameter, sunken apex and covered with wool and spines.
  • Roots: Fibrous.
  • Sap: With latex.
  • Now referred to: albilanata ssp oaxacana
  • Tubercule: Cylindrical, closely set, firm, 5 – 7 mm long and 3 mm wide. Dull green.
  • Axil: With white wool.
  • Radial spine: 20 – 27, stiff, straight or curved, smooth, white, 2 – 5 mm long, irregular radiating, the collateral the longest.
  • Central spine: 1 – 2, needle like, when 2 the uppermost the longest, straight, smooth, erect, 2 – 3 mm long, brown or glassy white with brown tip.
  • Flower: Broad funnelform, 15 – 18 mm long and in diameter, dark carmine.
  • Fruit: Glossy red, 6 – 16 mm long, 2 – 4 mm wide, stick-shaped to club-shaped, ripens 12 months after flowering.
  • Seed: Brown, round to club-shaped, 1 mm long and 0,8 mm in diameter. Hilum subbasal. Selfsterile.
  • Flowering period in Cultivation (Europe): April – mai.
  • Minimum temperature: 5 – 10?C.
  • Habitat Substrate: Between rocks in sandy soil with humus.
  • Geographic Distribution: Mexico, Puebla, near El Marqu?s; Guerrero near Mogote and Corralito; Morelos near Chavarria. Altitude 1100 – 1500 meter.
  • Comments: Less of central spines, a few more radial spines and a more cylindrical growth are the differences with albilanata ssp oaxacana.
