Mammillaria kunthii

  • First description by Ehrenberg, Bot. zeitung 2: 835, 1844.

  • Body: Solitary, flattened globose to cylindrical, to 170 mm high and to 120 mm in diameter, sunken apically, dull green epidermis.
  • Roots: Fibrous.
  • Sap: With latex.
  • Now referred to: haageana ssp haageana
  • Tubercule: Pyramidal, four angled, 3 – 5 mm high and 6 mm wide at base.
  • Axil: With white wool and bristles.
  • Radial spine: 19 – 23, glassy white, radiating, very short.
  • Central spine: Most 4, sometimes 2, 4 – 9 mm long, the lowest the longest, somewhat thicker at base, glassy white, sometimes with reddish brown to black tips, straight to slightly curved, stiff.
  • Flower: Cherry-red, small, funnelform, 10 – 12 mm long and 6 – 8 mm in diameter.
  • Fruit: Club-shaped, red, 20 mm long and 4 mm wide, ripens 6 – 8 months after flowering.
  • Seed: Brown, club-shaped, 1 mm long and 0,6 mm wide. Hilum small and subbasal.
  • Flowering period in Cultivation (Europe): April – mai.
  • Minimum temperature: 5 – 10?C.
  • Habitat Substrate: On limestone rocks in humus soil between spare overgrowth.
  • Geographic Distribution: Mexico, Oaxaca, near Tomellin canon. Altitude 2100 m.
  • Comments: This species has nothing to do with haageana ssp haageana. It is practical identical with ignota (albilanata ssp oaxacana) aside from a few spines less or more and was found in the same area.
