Mammillaria ignota

  • First description by Reppenhagen: Die gattung Mammillaria nach dem heutigen stand meines wissens 1987; 126 – 128.

  • Body: Solitary, globose to cylindrical, sunken apically, green to dull green, covered with spines and wool, 30 – 70 mm high and 40 – 70 mm in diameter.
  • Roots: Fiberous.
  • Sap: With latex.
  • Now referred to: albilanata ssp oaxacana
  • Tubercule: Short conical to conical, firm, 8 – 10 mm long and 4 – 5 mm in diameter.
  • Axil: With white wool.
  • Radial spine: 19 – 28, needle like, glassy white to white, smooth, straight, somewhat radiating horizontal, 4 – 8 mm long.
  • Central spine: 4 – 6, mostly 4, firmer than the radials, the lowermost the longest, 4 – 10 mm long, glassy white, white to yellowish with short brown tips.
  • Flower: Cherry red to pink,
  • Fruit: Red, ripens 6 – 8 months after flowering, 10 – 20 mm long and 3 – 4 mm in diameter.
  • Seed: Bright brown, club – shaped, 1 mm long and 0,6 mm wide and thick.
  • Flowering period in Cultivation (Europe): March – April.
  • Minimum temperature: 5 – 10?C.
  • Habitat Substrate: On limestone rocks in humus soil between spare overgrowth.
  • Geographic Distribution: Mexico, Oaxaca, near Tlaxiaco and Santo Tomas Ocatepec. Altitude 2100 m.
  • Comments: Why Hunt this valid species combined to albilanata ssp oaxacana is a mystery that needs further explanation.
