Mammillaria antesbergiana

  • First description by Lau, Cactus and Succulent Journal (U.S.). 63 (1): 17-19 1991.

  • Body: 5 – 10 cm high and 10 – 20 cm in diameter. dark green, depressed globose.
  • Roots: Fibrous and horizontal.
  • Sap: With latex.
  • Now referred to: wagneriana
  • Tubercule: 13 – 21 spirals, 1 cm long, on base 1 cm in diameter, rhomboid shaped.
  • Axil: With a lot of white wool in youth, later with a bit of wool.
  • Radial spine: 7, radiating, 5 somewhat longer, mostly 6 mm long, the lowermost the longest , about 12 mm long, ivory colored with darker tip, the other 2 white.
  • Central spine: 1 – 2, straight, awl-shaped, 2 – 2,2 cm long, ivory colored, dark tips, very variable.
  • Flower: Whitish with pinkish midstripe, 15 mm long and in diameter.
  • Fruit: Club-shaped, dark red, 11 mm long and 5 mm wide.
  • Seed: Drop-shaped, 0,9 – 1 mm long, 0,4 – 0,5 mm in diameter, dull reddish brown to black. Hilum basal. About 180 seeds in one fruit.
  • Flowering period in Cultivation (Europe): March – April.
  • Minimum temperature: 5 – 10?C.
  • Habitat Substrate: In rocky ground, surrounded by oak trees and pine wood.
  • Geographic Distribution: Mexico, South Durango on the border with Zacatecas, near Canoas. Altitude 1650 – 2500 meter.
  • Comments: Antesbergiana is more related to gigantea and pettersonii than to wagneriana.
